Bloggers Are The Next Big Thing

USA Today had a feature last Monday showing a list of the “top 25 things that shaped the internet”. Although I don’t necessarily agree with all their rankings of the events, some are very important. The list included Myspace (24), YouTube (20), Instant Messaging (11), Google (6) and Email (2).

We still use all these things in our daily lives but I really believe blogging will be one of the next big things people rely on as an information source. The growth has been tremendous, but most of the thousands of blogs started every day never make it past 1 week. This creates a huge inefficiency in the market allowing for determined bloggers to do very well. The few blogs and bloggers that do make it have a chance at getting a lot of popularity. I’m sure we all read several blogs daily and I’d give you a list of some of the really mainstream blogs but I don’t have time to Google for them right now. For example - the 795th (according to alexa) most popular web site in the world right now is the blog PerezHilton dot com. It has been around since mid 2005 and has become one of the main sources for celebrity gossip.

The point of this post is that although blogging has been around for a few years, there are still huge opportunities for growth and monetization. If you are not making money blogging right now, don’t give up. It takes time, quality content and perseverence.

  • I am currently working on a very short, free eBook for my newsletter subscribers which will provide methods and resources to start your blog, grow and monetize it. It should be ready within the next 2 weeks. Trust me, it will be useful. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so to receive the eBook and newsletters :)

I totally agree with you Jane! I believe the future of the internet is also blogging, but I think what’s really going to be needed is the consolidation of sites in the same genre to form “newspaper/all in one” type sites where people can get all their information.

Totally. That’s why you see the newspaper sites accepting comments now. And the recent advertising alliances between Yahoo! and several newspapers. The list goes on. They’re definitely trying to mirror the “blog” model.

I think blogging has a long way to go in terms of organising all the information coming through, as well. There are great blogs out there but they’re not necessarily easy to find. Technorati is a good source.

Perezhilton.com is utter trash… and I love it.

I’m making about 10c a day from my blog (it’s only a few weeks old, mind) so I’m always interested in ways to increase that! Thanks for all the tips.

I agree blogging has a long way to go. But it is better to get in now then when it has reached it. Then It will be hard make it then.

think of blogs as the small startup sites back in the late 90s . . . the best of the best will rise to the top and brand themselves well . . . while the smaller ones that barely stay afloat will consolidate themselves to stay competitive.

I’m currently at college, and barely watch any television except Lost, Prison Break, and Heroes…I never watch the news, the main source I get my news from is from the internet. Through blogs, and digg. Other than that, there is no reason for me to be watching tv.

I’m the same way. 95% of my news and information comes from the internet.

That way you can always choose the topics you want to know about, better that Tv, where they decide which news you are going to watch!

Yeah. Some people reckon that blogs are already on the decline, but I think there is further development to be made in the actual format of blogs.

I mean, in the next 20 years, as the speed of Internet access increases, and technology progresses, it may be possible to leave little short video comments in the comments section - that would be weird!

My guess is within the next 5 years that will be possible. Video blogging and video sites will one of the next big things in the coming year or two. Especially with the growth of youtube.

I’m surprized MySpace + YouTube are rated so High as shapers but i guess they have tons of users* sigh….

One thing is MySpace did get folks tuned into personalizing their Blog Space + adding Widgets + stuff*

& YouTube forced everybody to go HighSpeed Internet in order to view the Videos*

Boggles the Mind!!

;))

[…] Jane May - Same gal who runs Career Rambling, as I mentioned above, except now she’s branched out to her own personal blog to review the successes of her other operations. It’s a good read - it’s sorta like watching a reality TV show on Career Ramblings. Did I mention she’s also fucking hot? I think I have a little crush on her. Well at least she hot is according to the photos on her blog - let’s hope we don’t find a perverted 45 year-old virgin man with a bald head and a doughnut waist behind the keyboard. Just kidding Jane! … Man, I wonder how long it would take for her to get sick of me making these comments I shouldn’t be making outside the bars in Vancouver! […]

OK Jane-

You have my attention. How do you subscribe to receive the e-book when it is ready in a week or two?

Certainly there is much attrition. I have been blogging only for 90+ days and can pretty much tell who the players are and who will survive.

Thanks
